Dr. Eve Hayes de Kalaf’s New Book: Legal Identity, Race and Belonging in the Dominican Republic
Dominican Studies Association member Dr. Eve Hayes de Kalaf has a new book. Legal Identity, Race and Belonging in the Dominican Republic: From Citizen to Foreigner (Anthem Series in Citizenship and National Identities) will be published by Anthem Press later this year.
As per Anthem’s website:
This book provides a cautionary tale regarding legal identity practices as promulgated by the World Bank, UN and Inter-American Development Bank. It warns that policies encouraging the en masse registration of native-born migrant-descended populations can also force the thorny question of nationality, unsettling long-established identities and entitlements.

Congratulations to Dr. Hayes de Kalaf.
Professor Nelson Santana Awarded PSC CUNY Award
Dominican Studies Association Board Member Professor Nelson Santana is awarded a PSC CUNY Traditional A Award. The award provides up to $3,500 in funding for research. Professor Santana will use the funds for travel to the Dominican Republic in order to visit repositories throughout the nation. He expects to visit the Archivo General de la Nación (AGN) and Biblioteca Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña, as well as other, more niche repositories. Professor Santana’s project centers around Dominican exiles.
As per the PSC CUNY:
The Professional Staff Congress-City University of New York (PSC-CUNY) Research Award Program was established as a major vehicle for the University's encouragement and support of research and to leverage external funding. It seeks to enhance the University's role as a research institution, further the professional growth and development of its full-time instructional staff, and provide support for both the established and the younger scholar. Funding supports activities in the creative arts and research in natural science, social science and humanities, including research related to curriculum development, improvement in teaching, adaptation of standard educational techniques to special clientele and the relationship between technical or occupational training and the liberal arts curriculum. Awards are distributed by the University Committee on Research Awards, a faculty committee, and administered by the Research Foundation of CUNY. Preference is given to junior faculty in the allocation of funds.
Congratulations to Professor Santana.

Evelyn Fernández-Ketcham Shares Message with Doctoral Students at Yeshiva University
DSA board member Evelyn Fernández-Ketcham, a Ph.D. student at the Wuzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University, shared a message with doctoral students. Below, you can read her message, as published via the Yeshiva University Wurzweiler School of Social Work PhD Newsletter:
My current research interest and dissertation topic is focused on emerging adulthood, 18- to 29-year-olds. My involvement in the Wurzweiler Ph.D. program has been great for me, and it’s already impacting my work greatly. I am actually carrying out a survey research that will contribute to the scholarly community and inform my practice. I plan to use the baseline data from my dissertation to implement a larger scale research project across community colleges in the City University of New York.
To my fellow Ph.D. colleagues approaching the dissertation phase, I would say: 1) listen to your committee—they are the experts in helping you to the finish line (they are your allies); 2) everyday, even if it’s an hour, engage in an activity that contributes to advancing your dissertation (as simple as updating your references); and 3) steer away from the temptation to rush completing your dissertation: at the same time, balance managing urgency and patience is required to get you to the end (embrace the process).
As an old proverb says, “It’s better to take many small steps in the right direction than to make a great leap forward only to stumble backward.”
Professor Nelson Santana Named Spring 2021 Fellow of the CUNY Faculty Fellowship Publication Program
DSA Board member Professor Nelson Santana has been selected as a fellow of this year's Faculty Fellowship Publication Program (FFPP). An initiative of The City University of New York (CUNY), the FFPP is a university-wide initiative that provides untenured faculty the opportunity to work under the guidance of a tenured faculty member and alongside a team of fellows, work toward the "design and execution of writing projects essential to progress toward tenure."
Professor Santana is working under the guidance of Dr. Ted Ingram, faculty member in the Department of Education & Academic Literacy at Bronx Community College. According to Professor Santana, “I am honored to work alongside a group of brilliant CUNY colleagues. Their feedback on the research projects I have brought forth during our sessions have allowed me to produce stronger scholarship. Dr. Ingram’s guidance also has played a pivotal role in several aspects of my academic development.”
As per the official CUNY website, “The Faculty Fellowship Publication Program (FFPP) is sponsored by the Office of the Dean for Recruitment and Diversity in order to advance CUNY’s institutional commitment to diversity. This University-wide initiative assists full-time untenured CUNY faculty (assistant professors) in the design and execution of writing projects essential to progress toward tenure. These projects may include research-based scholarly articles for juried journals, books for academic presses and creative writing projects. This program provides three credit hours of course release for the spring semester, a writing group, and the guidance of a senior faculty member.”
